About this site
What is Kakomap?
Kakomap is a site where you can compare what a town looked like about 60 years ago with how it looks today, using the aerial photographs by era published by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI). It focuses on towns that have changed dramatically, such as reclaimed land and new towns, and alongside the photograph comparisons it brings together the elevation of the land and the rail lines that serve it.
It aims to answer simple questions such as "What did my town look like in the past?" and "When did this land become a town?" with real photographs.
About the nature of the information
This site presents past photographs and geographic data published by national government agencies. It does not assess the value or safety of any particular land or property. For disaster risk assessments, always check the official hazard maps published by local governments and other authorities.
